Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

4 Apr

logo

Tomorrow, April 5th from 11-1 we encourage you to attend Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, where 200 men will walk a mile in high heels in solidarity for women affected by sexual assault.  Colgate averages twice the amount of sexual assaults per year than the national average, and both men and women must fight against this issue on campus.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a national march to raise awareness about rape, sexual assault and gender violence that started in 2001. The march is a playful way to get the discussion started about sexual violence in your community.

We are so excited to go cheer on the men participating tomorrow and hope this event helps you think about, share, and discuss sexual assault with your friends and loved ones.

Do It in the Dark

5 Nov

Image

Come to the Kickoff event for Do It in the Dark at Theta Chi tomorrow night from 8-9pm!

Do It in the Dark is a fun electricity conservation competition on campus. Theta Chi and the Sustainability Office at Colgate will be hosting the event in which residents halls will compete for the lowest electricity use from November 3-17. You can check out the competition with the help of the Lucid Dashboard, a visual aid that shows just how much energy is being used in each hall.

The event at Theta Chi will be lit by lanterns only (mood lighting, if you will) and will feature acoustic guitar and piano playing by a few very talented brothers. You will also have a chance to win special prizes and gift cards in a black light painting competition!

Come to the event tomorrow, participate in the competition these next couple of weeks, and continue to conserve energy, it’s as simple as turning off the lights when you leave a room.

We will see you tomorrow night!

Aer UNICEF Charity Benefit Concert

30 Oct

Image

What: Aer benefit concert

Where: Hall of Presidents

When: 8:30 pm

Tomorrow night, celebrate Halloween the right way at the Aer benefit concert, hosted by the Blue Diamond Society and Gamma Phi Beta! Get psyched, because this event is going to be rockin’, literally.  Not only will there be awesome music by Aer and our very own Body Electric, but 100% of the proceeds will go to UNICEF.  Specifically, half the money will aid education for Sudanese children affected by the Darfurian genocide, and the other half will help provide equitable access to education for all genders of children across the globe. So far, the groups have raised a whopping $3,000 in ticket sales, but let’s help them reach their goal of $5,000! Suggested ticket donations are $7 for 1, $18 for 3, and $25 for 5.

Love the cause but can’t attend the event? No problem! You can still donate here. Also, be sure to check out their facebook page for more information.

Can’t wait to see you all there!

Back Pax

27 Oct

Image

This week we are really excited about Pax Backpacks. Not only are these backpacks fashionable, they make a difference for children growing up in poverty right here in the U.S. This company fights childhood poverty by donating 22% of their profits to a community partner that works to positively affect educational outcomes. Their donation represents the 22% of children in the U.S. who grow up in poverty. Not only does Pax donate to this cause they also participate in an apprenticeship program with Citizen Schools, a national nonprofit organization that works to close the achievement gap by closing the opportunity gap through after school programs.

The backpacks are cute and durable, work for a cause, and have a one year warranty! The backpacks are clean and simple and as college students we can connect to the Pax mission for education.

Carry this fashionable bag and promote education in the U.S.

Green Bikes Program

16 Oct
This fall there was an overwhelming demand for Colgate’s Green bikes! Over the past few years the University has developed a bike renting program. Student’s may rent bikes for $30 per period (Fall: September 1- November 1) and Spring (Post March Break-Week before finals) and Summer). The program hosts 25 bikes, each with a brand new helmet and a custom lock.

The Green Bikes Room is located in the Tunnel beneath Drake Hall. Students may apply here at anytime for the next period. If you check out the fairly new bike racks all around campus you may be envious of all the bikes parked there!
All Bike maintenance and repairs are courtesy of Guy’s Bike Shop in Madison, NY.
We encourage students to utilize this rental service to save money, gas and time!
Go Green and Go Gate!

Meatless Monday

7 Oct

Image     Image

Make a change to your Mondays by making them MEATLESS! Meatless Mondays is an international movement to encourage healthy eating choices. Initiated in 2003 by non-profit group The Monday Campaigns Inc. in conjunction with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for a Livable Future, the campaign has continued to augment. Eliminating some of our meat consumption can help improve health and decrease environmental stressors. The campaign hopes that by making healthy choices on Mondays, it will set a precedent for healthy eating and living for the rest of the week. We encourage you to jump on board and give Meatless Mondays a shot!

This Is Not A Play About Sex

6 Oct

Image

Last night’s showing of “This is Not a Play About Sex” was incredible! Written by Christina Liu, a 2013 Colgate grad, the play is funny, provocative, and real. For a senior project last year Christina interviewed 28 students, surveyed over 300 pages of transcript and 30 hours of video tape and ultimately created something truly important and relevant.

Hats off to all of the beautiful and intelligent men and women who gave this play a second go! We hope to see it as a Colgate staple in the future and encourage every student, faculty, and administrator to attend the last showing TODAY AT 2PM in Brehmer Auditorium in Dana and find out what it’s all about. These guys are having fun while doing good and starting the conversation about being a student on the Colgate campus, with all the fun, sadness, anger, and love that comes with it!

A standing ovation well deserved!
